RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
