Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
